FAQs

  • Steelcase materials are contract-grade. What does that mean?

Steelcase fabrics meet commercial-grade standards, which are significantly higher than those required for normal household use. This means your chair can be both aesthetically pleasing and handle constant use without showing signs of wear.

  • What is a double rub count? Why is it important?

All of our fabrics are tested for two types of crocking: wet (color transfer from wet fabric) and dry (color transfer from dry fabric). All Steelcase fabrics meet or exceed contract-industry standards, meaning you never have to worry about your chair transferring color onto your clothes or other surfaces.

  • I'd love a bright bold color, but I am worried about the color transferring. Will my chair's color transfer?

All of our fabrics are tested for two types of crocking: wet (color transfer from wet fabric) and dry (color transfer from dry fabric). All Steelcase fabrics meet or exceed contract-industry standards, meaning you never have to worry about your chair transferring color onto your clothes or other surfaces.

  • I plan to position my chair near a window, will the fabric fade over time?

When exposed to UV light, all colors fade over time, however, Steelcase fabrics are put through rigorous UV testing to ensure their ability to stand up to colorfastness is exceptional. All of our fabrics meet or exceed contract-industry standards for colorfastness to UV light. And for what it's worth, we position many of our own chairs (both in our corporate and home offices) near windows because we are confident in our fabrics' ability to withstand UV light for long periods.

  • Oops, I spilled on my chair. How can I clean my Steelcase fabric?

All Steelcase fabrics have a "WS" cleaning code, except our Elmosoft leather which has a "W" cleaning code.

For removing water-based marks or stains (such as coffee, milk, soft drinks, fruit juices, washable ink, etc.):

    - First, gently apply a water-based cleaner, that is specifically made for cleaning fabric, to the soiled area using a clean cloth or a sponge.

    - Second, if possible, work the cleaner into a lather to minimize soaking the fabric. Using light brushing motions, brush from the outside of the soiled area towards the center to prevent rings.

    - Finally, allow the fabric to dry completely, then vacuum thoroughly.

For removing oil-based marks or stains (such as salad dressing, grease, lipstick, ballpoint ink, etc.):

    - First, gently apply a dry-cleaning fluid to the soiled area using a dampened, clean cloth or soft-bristle brush.

    - Next, using quick, light, rubbing or brushing strokes, work from the outside of the soiled area toward the center to prevent rings. Avoid soaking the fabric.

    - Then, gently blot with a clean, absorbent cloth to soak up and remove dampened soil.

    - Finally, allow the fabric to dry completely, then vacuum thoroughly.

  • Oops, I spilled on my chair. How can I clean my Steelcase leather?

Dusting with a clean, dry cloth is the recommended routine cleaning method for all Steelcase semi-aniline-dyed, full-grain leather.

    For removing spots or spills:

    - First, wipe away excess liquid immediately and let air dry.

    - Second, if necessary, work lukewarm water and a mild non-detergent soap into a thin lather with a soft cloth and rinse with clean water.

    - Finally, gently buff the leather to restore luster.

Note: The use of any other product could cause reactions with the solvent-free chemicals in the tanning process.

  • My high-performance seating chair comes with a 12-year Steelcase warranty. Does that include the chair's fabric too?

Yes, our Steelcase 12-year warranty protects your chair's fabric against any defects or workmanship issues. Like many warranties, ours does not cover general wear and tear, but rest assured, Steelcase fabrics are tested to the limits so we're confident they can stand up to daily life.
