How do you adjust a Steelcase Karman chair?
- Steelcase Karman is weight-activated and responds automatically to your body weight. The chair adjusts its support as you shift and change postures while sitting. All adjustments for the chair are located on the right-hand side within arm’s reach.
- The height of your seat can be adjusted using the small lever under the seat. To raise, lift your weight off the chair and pull the lever up. To lower, remain seated and pull the lever up. The chair’s proper position is when your feet are flat on the floor, thighs are parallel to the floor and arms are parallel to your work surface.
- Karman’s armrests move independently, so you can customize the fit for each side. To adjust the arm height, press the button under the arm, lift or lower the armrest to your desired height and then release button.
You can adjust the width, pivot or depth of the armrest by pushing arm caps in or out, forward or backward or side to side. Armrests are adjusted properly when your forearms are supported at your sides and your shoulders are relaxed.
- Steelcase Karman has one simple control to adjust both back tension and recline. The comfort dial supports four recline positions:
1. Weight-activated full recline.
2. Weight-activated full recline with tension that has more resistance than your body is providing.
3. Mid-stop recline setting.
4. Upright lock setting.
Karman includes built-in lumbar support in every chair. An optional lumbar support is available to provide additional support to your lower back. Slide the lumbar up or down to fit in the curve of your back.
The additional support is optional for those who feel they can benefit from even more lumbar support.

What are the three Intermix options?

The unique weaving process results in three variations of Intermix:
- Intermix is classic and translucent with a more traditional mesh look and feel.
- Intermix Shift is color-shifting and provocative with a dynamic visual that changes with light and viewing angle.
Intermix Opaque is luxurious and residential with the hand-feel of upholstery. To achieve this residential look Steelcase Karman was created with a single layer of mesh with additional filaments.

Does the Steelcase Karman have adjustable seat depth?
Steelcase Karman was designed with a fixed seat depth to create a dynamic sitting experience so there is no need to adjust the seat depth to support the full legs. The seat was intentionally designed this way giving you a perfectly balanced feeling, as you choose your recline position, the seat flexes to position you in the optimal counter balanced position. This position balances your weight and keeps your body centered over your sit bones, for the ideal ergonomic support.
This, in turn, mitigates the risk factors that we commonly see, like contact stress on the back of the knee and other passive tissues.
